Prepare your computer

  • Mac: turn on Remote Login in System Settings → General → Sharing, for the user you’ll sign in as.
  • Linux: install and start the OpenSSH server (for example sudo apt install openssh-server).
  • Mosh: also install mosh on the computer (brew install mosh or your package manager) and allow UDP ports 60000–61000 through any firewall.

Connect

Tap Add Connection, pick Mosh or SSH, enter user@host and your computer’s login password, then tap Connect. At home, use the computer’s local name or IP address on the same Wi-Fi. Away from home, use a VPN such as Tailscale on both devices and enter its address.

Common problems

  • Connection refused: Remote Login or the SSH server is off, or the port is wrong (the default is 22).
  • Can’t reach the host: check that both devices are on the same network or VPN, that the computer is awake, and that Moshquito has Local Network access in Settings → Privacy & Security.
  • Wrong user name or password: use the computer’s account name (run whoami on it) and its login password.
  • Couldn’t reach Mosh over UDP: a firewall or router is blocking UDP 60000–61000. Use SSH or open those ports.
  • Host key changed: the computer now presents a different identity. Don’t connect unless you know why, such as a reinstall.
